In the fifth month of the Chongzhen era, I packed my belongings and set off on my journey. I left the capital gate, followed the city’s western wall, passed through the Water Gate, and went south to the Lianhua Bridge. I got off my sedan chair at the western gate of Xizhimen, which is a famous scenic spot in the capital.

Following the lake to the west, you will reach the Taiye Pool. To the west of the pool is the Shennu Gate, to the north of the gate is the Dianmen, and to the north of the Dianmen is the Bell Tower. I left from the southern gate of the Bell Tower, passed through the Chongwen Gate, and went south through the Dongzhimen, then out through the Qihua Gate, followed the eastern city wall, and out through the Pingzhen Gate, followed the northern city wall, and out through the Desheng Gate, followed the western city wall, and out through the Xizhimen. It seems that the entire city is within my grasp.

In the fifth month of the Chongzhen era, I visited Manjing. It was early spring, and the weather was gradually warming up. The lake and mountain scenery were refreshed and new. I brought a bottle of wine and a fish, and drank at Manjing. The well water was clear, the fish leaped on the surface, the wine aroma spread, and it was very pleasant. I sat with a few close friends around the well, drinking wine, writing poems, laughing and talking, not knowing that old age was approaching.

Beside the well, there was an old man with white hair and a tattered robe, who claimed to be Li, ninety years old. I asked him how he found joy in life, and Li said, “Life in the world is like a white horse galloping through the gap of time, passing by in a flash. Now that I am old, I can no longer be of use to the world, so I only take joy in wine and poetry, and spend the rest of my life in this way.” Upon hearing this, I felt dee moved, and I became friends with Li, regardless of our age difference.

On that day, I visited Manjing and saw the peach blossoms blooming by the well, red and white intermingling, like brocade and embroidery. I took a cup of wine and poured it over the flowers, wishing Li to have the fortune of the East Sea and the longevity of the South Mountain. Li also raised his cup in return and said, “To meet a friend in life is enough!’

I visited Manjing and saw a small pavilion by the well, with a stone tablet in the pavilion inscribed with the characters “Manjing,” with strong and forceful calligraphy and a magnificent atmosphere. I carefully examined the tablet, and learned that this well was built during the Ming Dynasty and had a history of several centuries. I thought, this well has witnessed many changes in the world over the years, and I couldn’t help but feel dee moved.

As night fell, I and Li, along with a few friends, set up a banquet by the well, drinking wine and admiring the moon. The moon was bright and the silver light洒满湖面, like a dream and illusion. I raised my cup to the moon, drinking with it as if there were three of us, talking about the past and present, feeling about life.

I visited Manjing and was so happy that I didn’t want to leave. When I was leaving, Li sent me to the edge of the well and said, “Your journey, I don’t know when you will be able to meet again. I wish you to take care of yourself, and not to forget the joy of Manjing.” I replied, “Your words are very true, I will remember it in my heart. If we can meet again, I will definitely visit Manjing again and talk about our old feelings.”

I left Manjing and my heart was not at ease. On my way back, I thought, life is like a dream, and things are unpredictable. Only by cherishing the present can one not waste one’s youth. The visit to Manjing was a great joy in life, and I will remember it forever.
